OpenWRT on a Linksys WRT54G
I recently purchased a Linksys WRT54G. These wireless routers are popular because the firmware can easily be upgraded to increase the functionality via custom firmwares such as DD-WRT, HyperWRT or Sveasoft Alchemy. Another alternative, which offers even more functionality and complete control over all aspects, is OpenWRT, a mini Linux distribution especially designed for the WRT54G.
I got mine from CPL for $115. I was able to look at the box at the store and check the serial number on the outside of the packaging before buying. After deciding to try the OpenWRT I had a small problem when I tried to TFTP upload the firmware. It would only try send the first block and then die:
tftp> put openwrt-wrt54g-squashfs.bin
sent WRQ <file=openwrt-wrt54g-squashfs.bin, mode=octet>
received ACK <block=0>
tftp>
Eventually I was able to get it working using the TFTP program that comes with the Knoppix Live CD. Knoppix to the rescue once again!
