The New Web, where VCs dig Digg?

Digg.com has really hit the big time with the announcement they have received US$2.8 million in venture capital funding. If you haven’t seen Digg before, its a social news and bookmarking website that puts the editorial power back in the hands of the readers - every single user gets a say in what makes today’s front page story. It also has lots of cool features like making it easy to see what your friends find interesting, for example. Apparently Revision3’s Diggnation, the weekly podcast of the top Digg stories, is not involved with the deal, but I doubt that would worry Kevin too much!

This announcement, combined with the current hot topic/buzzword Web 2.0, makes me wonder what we have in store for us in the near future. The web is certainly changing for the better, but it is important to watch out for the hype of the dot com days.

One thing I have really noticed is how the web is lowering the barriers and making all sorts of things possible that were previously unheard of. Take Lulu for example, an independant book publisher which allows you to publish a book on demand. That is, the book is only actually printed when someone clicks to purchase your book! Not just a photocopy either, a real, bound, book. Next stop Amazon and for virtually no cost at all you are on your way to a best seller! Amazing!
